The instantly recognisable dilute blues-rock sound of Dire Straits is the creation of it's leader and songwriter Mark Knopfler.
As well as being the creator of the band's original sound, Mark also has the songwriter's gift of melody, although this too is rather restrained and understated, made up of subtle shifts which mingle beautifully with his sublime guitar work.
It is toss-up whether he will be best remembered for his songs, or for the inimitable guitar technique so admired by GOD.
